About Bay Area Rapid Transit
Bay Area Rapid Transit, commonly known as BART, was created to develop a regional rapid-transit system for the San Francisco Bay Area. Planning began in the 1950s as population growth and increasing automobile traffic created demand for a high-capacity public transportation alternative. The BART district was formed in 1957.
Construction began in the 1960s, and BART opened its first passenger service in 1972. The system subsequently expanded throughout the East Bay, San Francisco, and the Peninsula, including service to San Francisco International Airport.
